Mountain Equipment Coop store - Barrie, Ontario
Completed 2010

This 20,400 ft2 building adapts the design and sustainable strategies of the MEC Longueuil store for use on a site in Barrie, Ontario. Only the experimental rain garden hasn't been repeated. The store is therefore characterized by its exposed steel and laminated timber structure and by its saw-toothed roof, which allows the store to be illuminated by daylight for 50% of its operating hours. This time the saw-toothed roofs will hold photovoltaic panels producing 60,000 kWhours of electricity, roughly 15% of the total expected electrical requirements of the building. The store was completed in collaboration with engineers Pageau Morel, Cleland Jardine, and with construction manager PCL Constructors.
