Villeray Renovation 1
Completed 2001 and 2007

This two-phase conversion of a duplex into a cottage in the Villeray borough created a large, sunlit, open-plan living area on the ground floor overlooking the rear garden through a pair of large windows. At the entrance a large vestibule enclosed by Japanese-inspired sliding panels welcomes visitors and accommodates strollers and the other requirements for daily life of the young family. A sculptural wood staircase with a skylight above it leads to the 2nd floor, which has been laid out with 3 bedrooms and an open office at the top of the staircase where it enjoys the increased sense of space and the daylight. At the base of the stairs half of the basement was excavated to provide additional height over a home office and playroom for the children. The owners' comfort was improved by the increase in daylight and natural ventilation, and the stained wood trim adds richness to the interior finishing. This project was completed in collaboration with engineers Calculatec and with general contractor Les Entreprises Daniel Petrari.
