Combining traditional architecture and sustainable design principles, the Baie d’Urfé House is a superior quality home well integrated in its neighbourhood, marrying the crafting of high quality interior spaces with environmental and energy-efficient strategies and technologies. The house is sited on a large lot near Lake Saint Louis and was designed to maximize the benefits of its deep lot and the gentle slope towards the lake to the South. The living rooms and dining room are arranged along the south façade of the main floor and protected by a deep roof overhang. They are connected to terraces on the east and west through large window bays, and open on their south side to a balcony that overlooks a protected courtyard. The slope of the land permits the family room in the basement to open level with this intimate space, protected by a planted rock wall. Inside, the double-height entry hall with its elegant wood staircase, the high coffered ceilings of the main rooms, the generous windows, the stained wood doors, the wood mouldings and 3 fireplaces add to the ambiance. The house is heated by geothermal heat pumps, and the owners’ comfort is assured by construction exceeding Novoclimat standards. This project was completed in collaboration with engineers Calculatec and with builder Construction Renaissance.
