Located on an old river bed in the Southwest borough, on a narrow lot between a condemned building and a six-plex built on unstable soil, this build for Habitat for Humanity Montreal presented many technical challenges in addition to the vision of ecological construction. The structure was designed to seek a solid foundation without disturbing the neighbours with which it shares party walls, including one shared or ‘mitoyen’ wall. Le project was designed to house two low-income families that the charitable organization was helping to become home owners, providing functional, bright and open apartments that both families can adapt to their needs and personalize. Built in part by volunteers, the project needed to use simple construction methods even in responding to the technical challenges. This project received a Gold certification from LEED® Canada for Homes, a first for the organization in Canada, and contributed to the “greening” of Habitat for Humanity Montreal.
