Steel life

Completed 2013

This project to convert a duplex into a new single-family home meets the spatial needs of a young family who hoped preserve the charm of their existing apartment on the ground floor while creating a warm, open and inviting space filled with light. The ground floor living spaces are laid out in an open concept and are filled with sunlight, pouring in from the backyard through large new windows. In order to open up the space the existing bearing walls were replaced by steel column and beams that traverse the space from one end to the other, while the new vestibule has glass walls to allow the light in while limiting the loss of heat in winter. The entrance to the house was completely reconfigured to provide a large mudroom with ample storage space. Upstairs, the new bedrooms benefit from the existing layout and divisions to transform the floor into private spaces for the family, including a generous family bathroom with a large soaking tub. This project was completed in collaboration with engineers Calculatec and with general contractor Karukera.
