This 19,500 ft2 building is characterized by its exposed steel and laminated timber structure and by its saw-toothed roof, which allows the store to be illuminated by daylight for 50% of its operating hours. The project is certified LEED Gold. An Integrated Design Process was used to optimize the energy efficiency and reduce the environmental footprint of the building. The mechanical system was developed to reduce energy and water consumption in combination with the reuse of rain water. A geothermal system ensures control of the air temperature and heats the store’s concrete floor. Other sustainable strategies include a high performance building envelope, a displacement ventilation system, the use of solar hot water panels, the use of healthy, local and environmentally responsible materials and construction waste management. The rain water falling on the parking lot is collected and filtered by an experimental rain garden that is part of an ongoing research project.
