Completed 2016

This renovation project transforms a simple and charming duplex in Ahuntsic into a cottage, providing more space for a growing young family, and creating a well-organized, bright and welcoming home. To open up the ground floor and admit more sunlight, the existing bearing walls were replaced by laminated timber columns and beams. The newly opened space provides room for a large dining table next to the kitchen, which is the heart of these clients’ daily life. A large patio door and windows in the rear wall of the house open it up to the generous back yard. Key to the home’s layout, a new stair rises in the centre of the home, defining the living spaces without obstructing light and views. Built of steel with wooden steps and glass guardrails, the new stair is bathed in light from the skylights at its summit. At the front of the house a large glazed entry vestibule provides a generous arrival space and ample storage for the family. A reconfiguration of the 2nd floor allowed for four comfortable bedrooms with closets as well as a large bathroom. The new wood, steel and glass elements give the renovated home a contemporary look, and in combination with the open living space create a simple, warm and inviting home.
